To extend the life of their tea supplies, the Japanese added husked rice to the tea leaves creating a classic tea enjoyed by people all around the world. The leaves for this tea are hand rolled into tiny pellets that will unfurl into long green banners when steeped. Vietnamese Lotus
Known as the "Tea of the Emperors," lotus tea was once so expensive that it was only consumed by Vietnamese royalty. Today it is much more accessible, but it is still a special treat enjoyed especially during the Tet holiday. The process of making this exquisite tea is quite laborious. It is made from green tea leaves placed inside a lotus flower in order for it to absorb the sweet scent of the flower. It has a strong taste which is slightly bitter at first, but mellows in your throat ending with a wonderful lotus flower fragrance. Is wonderful served hot or cold.
